What does it take for non-english speakers to find success in the US?

Objective(s)

  1. students will learn the selectivity of the American music market

  2. Students will see the disparity between which languages/races are favored

  3. Students will be quizzed on how much non-English music they consume

 

Lesson:

  1. identify as many non-English musicians ty know

  • how many non-English musicians do they know

  • How many do they listen to semi-regularly

  • Write the major language they listen to and why?

2) History of non-English songs on the billboard top 10

  • offer a selection of song and pick which made it to the top 10 and which didn’t

  • Go into the history of songs on the top 10

  • Q: “why do you think these songs make it to the top 10?

3) localization of music

  • Chart history of song with/without Americans featured that made it to the top 10 or high on the billboard chart

  • Q: How do you think artists try to localize?

  • Q: What do you think are the greatest challenges that artists face when they try to localize

4) Artists on the rise

  • Talk about artists who have localized but who aren’t necessarily topping the chart

  • Americans who left and are trying to gain popularity again (Ex. East asians like Jay Park)

  • Q: Do you think we will reach the point that popular musicians from non-english backgrounds can succeed on their own in the US?
